OCA - NOC Maldives holds sports journalism seminar

Male, Maldives: A four-day sports journalism seminar organised jointly by the Maldives Olympic Committee and Olympic Council of Asia concluded on Thursday, April 14, at the  Maldives Centre for Social Education in the capital Male. It was the first sports journalism seminar ever held in the Maldives and attracted 25 participants from newspapers, TV, radio, sports federations and other forms of media.

The course was held from April 11-14 and coincided with an Asian Football Confederation AFC Cup Group F match between local team VB Sports and TSW Pegasus from Hong Kong on Wednesday, April 13, at the National Stadium. This enabled the participants to discuss basic journalism skills such as preparation for the pre-match and post-match press conference, previews and match reporting and then put them into practice.

As well as this on-site practical experience, the nine classroom power point sessions covered a wide range of topics, such as story-gathering, contact-building, story construction, news, feature and column-writing and how the media can work more closely with the National Olympic Committee to promote sport and the Olympic Movement.

There was also a session to introduce the Olympic Council of Asia, its wide portfolio of multi-sports events and the basic concept for launching a new publication, in this case the OCA newsletter Sporting Asia.

Among the dignitaries at the opening ceremony on April 10 and closing ceremony on April 14 were Maldives Olympic Committee President Ibrahim Ismail Ali and Secretary General Ahmed Marzooq.

The seminar was conducted by the Editor of Sporting Asia, Jeremy Walker, whose 30-year career in sports journalism has included over 20 years in Asia covering a variety of sports and events, including four Olympic Games and four Asian Games.
