Prague, Czech Republic, November 2, 2017: Two world champions from very different sports won Asia’s top honours at the ANOC Awards 2017 at Forum Karlin in Prague on Thursday evening.

With 2017 a non-Olympic Games year, organisers selected the Female and Male Athlete of the year from each of the five continental associations based on performances in world championships.

China’s Song Yu was named Female Athlete of the Year for Asia for winning the women’s heavyweight (+78kg) judo title at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

The 31-year-old Song, from Qingdao, said she was very proud to be named ANOC Asian Female Athlete of the Year for 2017.

“This is one of the highlights of my career, and I would like to thank all the National Olympic Committees for selecting me to win this honour for Asia,” she said.

The Male Athlete of the Year for Asia went to Qatari high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim, who won the world title at the IAAF World Championships in London, adding to an Olympic silver medal from Rio 2016 and bronze from London 2012.

The 26-year-old Barshim thanked his family and friends for their support and also the Qatar NOC and the country.

“Thanks to all this support in Qatar I can win this award,” he said. “As for my coach, I love you!”
