SEA Games 2013 to offer 460 gold medals

Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar: The 2nd SEA Games Federation meetings for the 27th SEA Games 2013 were held on January 28-29 at Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar – host city of the regional sports festival this December. After much debate, the SEA Games Federation finally approved the sports programme of the 27th SEA Games, with 33 sports and 460 events. The 33 sports are:

Category 1 (two sports): Aquatics (Swimming, Diving and Water Polo) and Athletics.

Category 2 (23 sports): Archery, Badminton, Basketball, Billiards & Snooker, Boxing, Canoe, Cycling, Equestrian, Football including Futsal, Golf, Hockey, Judo, Karate, Rowing, Sepaktakraw including Traditional Chinlone, Sailing, Shooting, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Wrestling and Wushu.

Category 3 (eight sports): Bodybuilding, Chess, Kempo, Muay, Pencak Silat, Petanque, Traditional Boat Race and Vovinam.

The Category 3 sports of Kempo and Vovinam each have 18 events - 36 in total compared to 30 at the 2011 SEA Games, when the two sports were first introduced.

Two other sports with a significant increase in the number of events are Wushu, which has 23 events compared to the customary 16, and Chess, which has 18 when the norm is around 10. Sepaktakraw will have 10 events, four more than usual.
