Phuket, Thailand: The team leaders for the 4th Asian Beach Games in Phuket, Thailand, from November 14-23 gathered at the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket for the Chefs De Mission Seminar on Wednesday. Around 6,000 athletes and team officials from the 45 National Olympic Committees are expected to take part in 168 events in 26 beach or sea sports.
The Governor of Phuket Province, Mr Maitri Inthusut, welcomed the delegates, and said the white sandy beaches and blue seas of the island paradise would display the true essence of the beach games. He promised world-class sports facilities and the highest levels of professional service.
The Secretary General of organising committee PABGOC, Mr Kanokphand Chulakasem, said the Asian Beach Games had become a multi-sports model for other continents to follow and described Phuket as the “perfect location” for such a celebration of sport and culture.
On behalf of the OCA, Hon. Life Vice President Wei Jizhong said the 4th Asian Beach Games presented a big challenge for the organising committee, OCA and for Phuket because 26 sports will take place in the peak tourist season of November. With several new sports, such as beach modern pentathlon, on the programme and athletes accommodated in hotels around the island, Mr Wei urged the NOCs to send a strong administrative team to advise and assist the athletes regarding OCA protocol and procedures.
He said the success of the beach games concept would attract a lot of IOC members and International Federations to Phuket, with the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) planning to host a World Beach Games in the near future.
