OCA officially recognises Xiangqi

29 Jun 2009
The Olympic Council of Asia has welcomed a new sports federation into the family -- Xiangqi, or Chinese chess. The OCA's Sports Committee approved the application of the Asian Xiangqi Federation at its meeting in Singapore on Monday morning.

The AXF, whose president is OCA vice president Timothy Fok, of Hong Kong, was established in 1978 and has 16 member Asian countries/regions, one more than required by the OCA to gain official recognition.

"Currently there are billions of Xiangqi amateurs in Asia alone and quite a good percentage are actively involved with Xiangqi activities," Mr. Fok said in his application letter to OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Fahad Al-Sabah.

Xiangqi was played at the second Asian Indoor Games in Macau in 2007, and will be in the third Indoor Games in Vietnam in 2009 and the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China in 2010.
