Vietnam Deputy PM meets OCA’s Wei Jizhong

Hanoi, Vietnam: Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan received Wei Jizhong, Honorary Life Vice President of the Olympic Council of Asia, in Hanoi. Mr Wei is visiting Vietnam from October 23-26 to inspect the country’s preparations and to assess the government’s support for the bid to host the 18th Asian Games in 2019.

During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan thanked Mr Wei for helping Vietnam to organise the 3rd Asian Indoor Games in 2009 and the upcoming 5th Asian Beach Games in 2016. He said that, besides the economy, Vietnam always put its focus on the development of popular and professional sports activities.

In recent years, he added, the country had invested significantly in the sports sector and had achieved success in many sport events, emphasizing the fact that Vietnam, with sufficient infrastructure and resources, was ready to host the 18th Asian Games in 2019.

Mr Wei said that, through his activities in Vietnam, he found that the country was preparing well for the event. Mr Wei also was impressed by the determination and commitment of Vietnam’s Government, people and Hanoi City in hosting such an event.

Hanoi, Surabaya (Indonesia) and Duabi (United Arab Emirates) are bidding to host the 18th Asian Games in 2019. The OCA General Assembly in Macau, China, on November 8 will select the host city from the three candidates.

The 17th Asian Games will take place at Incheon, Korea, from September 19 to October 4, 2014, and feature 36 sports. Some 20,000 athletes, officials and media from the 45 National Olympic Committees are expected to attend.
