London Olympian Bahia is Qatar’s hot-shot at GCC Women’s Games

Manama, Bahrain: On the second day of the shooting competition in the 3rd GCC Women’s Games on Tuesday, Qatar were crowned champions in both the 10m rifle individual and team events. London Olympian Bahia Mansoor won individual gold, followed by compatriots Mahbooba Akhlaqi and Aisha Ebrahim in a Qatar 1-2-3 finish. They received their awards from GCC Women's Organising Committee Chairwoman Shaikha Naima Al Sabah of Kuwait.

The same trio led Qatar to the 10m rifle team gold medal, with the silver going to Kuwait (Maryam Arzooqi, Heba Arzooi and Zahra Khalil) and bronze to Bahrain (Sabeeka Mubarak, Sara Rashid and Muneera Yousif). The top three teams were honoured by Executive Committee Chairwoman and Bahrain Olympic Committee member Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa.

In other events Tuesday, Bahrain maintained their top form in the bowling championship as the quartet of Noora Sultan, Yasmine Akeel, Fatma Isa and Noora Janahi scored 4,193 points to take gold, ahead of Kuwait (3,821) and Oman (3,495). The top three finishers received their prizes from Supreme Council for Youth and Sports member Abdulrahman Jawahery.

On the last day of the athletics for the disabled, Bahrain won seven medals – three gold, three silver and one bronze. Bahrain's gold medals came from Fatma Safar in the shot put (F53-54), Zahra Abdulla in the discus (F37) and Asma Habib in the 400 metres. The UAE bagged the other gold medals through Seham Masaud in the javelin (F56-57-58) and Noora Khalifa in the shot put.

Basketball also finished on Tuesday with Kuwait beating Bahrain 56-52 to claim the silver medal. Qatar, who had already sealed gold, received the trophy from chief guest Shaikh Isa bin Rashid Al Khalifa. The curtain falls on the five-nation, eight-sport event on Wednesday, March 13.
