Olympic swimming champion Ai Shibata in 18th ANOC GA.
Ai Shibata: Olympics changed my life

14 Apr 2012
Moscow, Russia: Japanese Olympic swimming champion Ai Shibata attended the Association of National Olympic Committees General Assembly as a member of the Tokyo 2020 Bid Committee delegation on Saturday. Although it was her first time to represent the Tokyo 2020 Bid in front of global Olympic leaders and decision-makers, her speech as an Olympian resonated deeply with each member of the 18th ANOC General Assembly.

“My job in the bidding committee starts here as a presenter this time,” Shibata told ocasia.org after Tokyo’s presentation.

“As Japan's first-ever female 800m freestyle gold medallist from the Athens Olympic Games, today I really expressed the heart and the strong mind of an Olympian.

“I’m fortunate to become one of the role models for other athletes to follow. Hearing what the young athletes say will help them greatly become good athletes. This is all because of the Olympics,” Shibata said.

“If I didn’t go the Olympic Games I would just be an ordinary girl.”
