Pakistan, India join Gulf states in Al Bareh regatta

11 Jun 2014
Manama, Bahrain: Thirteen teams have signed up for the 21st Al Bareh International Regatta, scheduled to take place from June 19-23 at the Bahrain Maritime Sports Association premises near Al Jazayer Beach. Teams will come from 12 countries, including Egypt, which is sending two squads that will represent the Egyptian Sailing Federation and the Egyptian Yacht Club of Alexandria.

Other countries in the fray are France, India and Pakistan, besides regional teams from Tunisia, Morocco, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia and hosts Bahrain.

Founded in 1989, the Al Bareh International Regatta has become one of the major sailing events in the region. It will feature four racing categories: Laser Radial, Laser 4.7, Laser Standard and Optimist, which is open for young sailors.

Bahrain will be competing in all four categories with some of their best and rising sailors. Coached by Kacem Ben Jemia, the hosts have been preparing hard and hope to make a significant impact this year.

Bahrain Maritime Sports Association President Shaikh Khalifa bin Abdulla Al Khalifa is satisfied with the arrangements and preparations and expressed his pride at the progress achieved by Bahrain in organising major sailing competitions. This would not have been possible, he said, without the support of Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee President.
