The 10th Asia/Oceania Region Intergovernmental Ministerial Meeting on Anti-Doping in Sports 2013

Maldives: His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Hussain Shareef, Minister of Human Resources, Youth and Sports, Government of Maldives, has officially opened the 10th Asia/Oceania Regional Intergovernmental Ministerial Meeting on Anti-Doping in Sports on 28 March 2013. The meeting was hosted by the government of the Maldives, in cooperation with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), where 25 governments from Asia have attended.

WADA was represented by Mr. David Howman, Director General, Mr. Rob Koehler, Director of Education and Program Development, Ms. Anne Jansen, Senior Manager, Government Relations & Compliance, Mr. Kazuhiro Hayashi, Director, and Ms. Chiho Miki, Coordinator, Asia/Oceania Regional Office. Meanwhile, Mr. Andrey Kryukov, OCA Rules Committee Member & WADA Foundation Board Member attended as guest speaker with Ms. Nadiah AL Shamali, Manager, and Mr. Emilio Kanaan, Assistant, of the OCA Doping Control Department from the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).

The meeting was held on two consecutive days. On the first day of the event, Mr. David Howman gave comprehensive briefings on WADA 2013 Global activities and the revision of the World Anti-Doping Code; this was followed by updates presented by representatives from participating countries on their respective Anti-Doping Programmes. 

Mr. Rob Koehler briefed the attendees on the latest and the upcoming RADO activities and Education initiatives; while Ms. Anne Jansen presented on the UNESCO International Convention against Doping in Sports and its Voluntary Fund encouraging all countries to apply for it.

The WADA Asia/Oceania Regional Office has played a significant role during the meeting. Mr. Kazuhiro Hayashi presented briefings on the Asian Foundation Board Member Election process for 2014-2016 and the contribution to WADA for 2014. On the second day of the event, Mr. Andrey Kryukuv and Ms. Nadiah AL Shamali introduced the recent Activities and Games of the OCA and the OCA Doping Control Programme.

The Asia/Oceania Region Intergovernmental Ministerial Meeting on Anti-Doping in Sport is conducted on an annual basis to pave the way for all countries in Asia and Oceania to share their knowledge and experience of anti-doping programmes, and to provide an opportunity for the governments to discuss and decide upon anti-doping policies. The meeting was officially concluded on 29 March 2013.
