Ashgabat 2017 right on track with Olympic Village monorail

05 Jan 2017
Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, January 5, 2017: Apart from the sparkling new sports venues at the Ashgabat Olympic Complex, one of the other big attractions is the monorail linking all 30 stadiums and other infrastructure. As the countdown continues to the Olympic Council of Asia’s 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG 5) this September, the monorail will play a big part in the smooth running of the games for athletes, spectators and officials alike.

Providing a quiet and comfortable mode of transportation, the monorail will run through the 54-hectare territory of the sports complex without disturbing the flow of traffic and pedestrians down below at ground level. The overhead monorail track covers 5,100 metres and is fixed at a height of between six and 20 metres. There are eight stations built along the track to service all areas of the vast complex.

Two bridges, which have followed the architectural characteristics of the Turkmen capital, have been constructed at the point where the monorail track crosses the main Ataturk Street.

The train, which consists of four compartments, is designed for 75 passengers. It can reach a maximum speed of 70km per hour, but its cruising speed will not exceed 46km per hour. At this speed, the train will cover the entire route in 17 minutes.

Construction of the monorail began in June 2012. The track was manufactured at the Polimeks production factory and the trains were supplied by the Intamin Swiss Company. Three trains, which can transport up to 810 passengers per hour, can run simultaneously.

The monorail will be in full use for the first time at the OCA’s AIMAG 5, which will run from September 17-27, 2017, with 5,500 athletes from 62 National Olympic Committees – 45 from OCA and 17 from Oceania in the first joint initiative for the two confederations. There will be 21 sports on the programme to showcase the magnificent new stadiums within the Olympic Complex.
