Xu takes silver in ladies’ aerials

14 Feb 2014
Sochi, Russia: China added another medal to their Winter Olympic collection on Friday when Xu Mengtao took silver in the Freestyle Skiing Ladies Aerials at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park. Xu, who finished sixth at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, could have won gold here. The last competitor to jump, she needed only to land cleanly to take top spot but a hand drag in her landing meant she would have to settle for silver.

Competing in her fifth and final Winter Olympics, Alla Tsuper, 34, of Belarus won the gold with a score of 98.01. Xu was second with 83.50 and Lydia Lassila (Australia) was third on 72.12.

Silver medal-winner Xu, 23, said: “I am very happy indeed, but it is a shame because I did not win the gold medal. This is the fourth silver medal China has won at the Winter Olympics in aerials.

”Commenting on her last jump, Xu added: “I tried to land straight but I didn’t succeed. There was something wrong with my judgment.  I didn’t quite get used to the slope here because it is steeper than what we have in the United States where we train. My arm hurts and I cannot straighten it.”

The medal ceremony took place the following evening in Sochi Olympic Park.
