Hong Kong rugby sets sights on Rio 2016

04 Nov 2013
Hong Kong, China: Ex-Wales rugby sevens coach Gareth Baber and former New Zealand Black Ferns star Anna Richards have been announced as the new head coach and elite women’s sevens coach, respectively, at the Hong Kong Sports Institute.

HKSI Chief Executive Dr Trisha Leahy welcomed the two coaches and said: “The Hong Kong Rugby Football Union has established a very successful high-performance system prior to entry into the HKSI and we are confident that the appointment of these two highly regarded sevens coaches will add value and result in even better results on the international stage.”

Both coaches will start their contracts in December 2013 and will be based full time at the HKSI. An additional elite men’s sevens coach has yet to be appointed but is expected to be announced soon.

Baber, 41, is a former Newport Gwent Dragons scrum half whose position prior to assuming the HKSI coaching role was as attacks/backs coach for Cardiff Blues RFC in Wales.

Richards made her New Zealand Black Ferns debut in 1990 as a fly half and has three Women’s Rugby World Cup titles (1998, 2002 and 2006) to her credit.

The appointments underline Hong Kong’s determination to qualify for the rugby sevens competition at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
