Uzbekistan’s Misha Ge produces ‘fine’ PyeongChang performance

17 Feb 2018
Gangneung, Korea, February 17, 2018: When it comes to winter sports, the distinctive flag of Uzbekistan has become synonymous with figure skater Misha Ge in recent years. He is competing in his second Winter Olympics here at the Gangneung Ice Arena after a 17th-place finish at Sochi 2014 and wrapped up his campaign on Saturday by scoring 161.04 points in his free skate.

When added to his 83.90 from the short programme on Friday, this gave him a total of 244.94 and 17th place overall – exactly the same position as four years ago. He also flew the Uzbekistan flag at the OCA’s 8th Asian Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan, last February, finishing sixth.

Commenting on Saturday’s free skate, the 26-year-old Misha said: “Overall it was fine. There was a little difficulty on the preparation for today’s programme, on the body condition and some other stuff, but overall we are pulling through so I am glad for a fine performance.

“We still have time, another few weeks, for the world championship to find those little things and to work on them,” he added, referring to the 2018 Figure Skating World Championships place in Milan, Italy, from March 19-25.  With a wide range of interests, including music, dance and choreography, Misha feels that PyeongChang 2018 might be his last Winter Olympics as a competitor – but not as a participant.

“I think I will be in another role, choreographer, coach or OC (organising committee), we will see. But I’ll still be around skating, not far away, just in another role.” Spending time in Tashkent, Moscow, Beijing and Los Angeles – and speaking English, Mandarin and Russian – Misha is asked where home is these days.

“The world,” he replies. Although his figure skating career is not over yet, with his international background and experience in dance, music and choreography, he still has a lot to offer in figure skating and beyond as Uzbekistan’s Man of the World.
