Turkmenistan tops final AIMAG medal rankings

27 Sep 2017
Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, September 27, 2017: Host nation Turkmenistan finished well clear of the pack at the top of the final medal standings for the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games at the close of play on Wednesday. Turkmenistan won 89 gold medals, 70 silver and 86 bronze medals across the 21 sports for a total of 245 medals.

China came in second with 42 gold, 32 silver and 23 bronze for 97 total medals, while Iran was third with 36-23-59 for 118. Kazakhstan (28 gold medals), Uzbekistan (24), Thailand (21), Korea (15), Kyrgyzstan (13), Vietnam (13) and Hong Kong, China (10) completed the top 10.

In a line-up of 65 teams – 45 from the Olympic Council of Asia, 19 from Oceania and the African Refugee Team – 36 of them won at least one medal and 28 took home gold. The host nation won 62 of their 89 gold medals in two sports alone – 39 in Belt Wrestling and 23 in Traditional Wrestling.

Their record in Belt Wrestling was 39-23-23 for a total of 85 medals. The next best was Kyrgyzstan with five gold medals. In Traditional Wrestling, Turkmenistan won 23 gold, 14 silver and nine bronze for 46 medals in total. Uzbekistan was the next best with two gold medals.

China, as expected, performed well in the short-course (25m) swimming, winning 11 gold, 13 silver and five bronze medals for 29 in total. The highlight of the games, though, was the world record in men’s weightlifting 94kg for Iran’s Rio Olympics champion Sohrab Moradi, whose 413kg combined lift broke the previous mark set in 1999 by 1kg.
