Eritrea benefits from QOC’s global vision

Doha, Qatar: Eritrea witnessed a significant sporting occasion when a friendly football match took place between the Army of Qatar and Red Sea of Eritrea at Asmara International Stadium. The match was held to mark the official opening of the renovated stadium and the Qatari-Eritrean Friendship Hall on Thursday, June 2, when the hosts defeated their visitors from Qatar 1-0 to claim the gold medals and lift the trophy on this the historical occasion.
 
The renovation of the stadium and the Qatari-Eritrean Friendship Hall was part of the Qatar Olympic Committee’s vision “to be a leading nation in bringing the world together through sport.”
 
The Eritrean Commissioner of Sport, Major General Ramadan Osman, gave a welcome speech to HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, QOC Secretary General, and the accompanying delegation. Major General Osman lauded the good ties between Qatar and Eritrea and hailed the Qatari efforts to restore and renovate the stadium in the capital city.

HE Sheikh Saoud stressed that the renovation of Asmara International Stadium was a continuation of the good relations between Qatar and Eritrea, and was just one of a series of QOC projects outside the country.

Senior Eritrean officials thanked the Qatari leaders and people for renovating Asmara Stadium and the Qatari-Eritrea Friendship Hall, saying that Qatar was a pioneering nation in supporting social, cultural and sports events.

At a dinner banquet held at the Qatar Embassy Building in Asmara, the QOC Secretary General handed over a memorial shield to HE Mohammed bin Ali Al-Nuaimi, the Qatari Ambassador, in recognition of the Embassy’s efforts in providing services and support for the project.
