Afghanistan NOC holds 2nd General Assembly

Kabul, Afghanistan: The second Afghanistan NOC General Assembly was held on Saturday, December 15 at Hotel Serena as per the invitations sent out to the Afghan NOC General Assembly members and in accordance with the statutes approved by the Afghan NOC General Assembly and the IOC. Of the 28 GA members, 27 were in attendance, the exception being the cricket federation.

Afghanistan NOC President Mr Mohammad Zahir Aghbar opened the meeting and presented a brief report on the activities of the Afghanistan Olympic Committee during the last three years. He indicated that the Afghan NOC enjoyed excellent relations with international sporting bodies, including the IOC and OCA, which resulted in the successful participation of Afghan athletes in the London Olympics and Asian Beach Games.

He also explained that the Afghan athletes are preparing for the upcoming Asian Games. Mr Aghbar thanked the IOC and OCA representative for being present at this important General Assembly. As per the request of the house, the General Assembly unanimously decided that, before proceeding to the agenda Items, 27 new sports federations and representatives of Afghanistan ministries should be included as full members of the Afghan NOC GA, with full voting rights.

The General Assembly unanimously approved the 27 sports federations and representatives as GA members with voting rights of the Afghan NOC. The Afghan NOC now consists of 55 members, including 28 sports federations on the Olympic Games programme and 20 non-Olympic sports federations. The rest are representative of Afghan organisations.

In the elections, Mr Mohammad Zahir Aghbar from the handball federation was re-elected President for the term 2012– 2016 by a majority vote.  He secured 52 out of the 54 votes. Mr Jan Halam Hussaini, President of the Afghanistan Athletics Federation, was elected Secretary General by securing 41 out of the 54 votes.

Ms Samir Asghari  of the Afghanistan Basketball Federation was elected Treasurer with 28 out of 54 votes. The General Assembly unanimously elected the following candidates as Afghanistan NOC Vice Presidents (two) and members of the Executive Board: Vice Presidents: Ms Amina Mustaqim Jawid, Mr Mohammad Hashim Karimi.

EB members: Ms Nasima Niazi (Member of Parliament), Dr Younis (President, Volleyball Federation),  Mr Keramuddin Karim (President, Football Federation), Mr Dad Mohammad Payenda (President, Boxing Federation), Mr Ziauddin Bakhshi (President, Taekwondo Federation), Mr Haji Zemari (President, Swimming Federation), Mr Amir Hussian Hydari (President, Newfull Contact Federation), Mr Bawar Khan Hotak (President, Bodybuilding Federation).

The members expressed their happiness on the election of two female sports leaders in Afghanistan as NOC Vice President and NOC Treasurer.
