The Fun Run is about to start inside Sapporo Dome.
Smart Torch Relay lights up Sapporo Dome

06 Jul 2014
Sapporo, Japan: The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and Incheon Asian Games Organising Committee (IAGOC) brought the excitement of this year’s Asian Games to Japan on Sunday with a Fun Run and Smart Torch Relay promotion at the Sapporo Dome. Over 500 people, many of them parents and small children, took part in the 2km Fun Run, which started and finished inside the Dome and preceded the annual Kitagas Group six-hour relay marathon involving some 10,000 athletes.

The Vice Mayor of Sapporo, Mr Noriaki Ikushima, took part in the Fun Run opening ceremony and became the latest recipient of the Smart Torch Relay flame on his Samsung Galaxy S5. IAGOC staff also hosted a kiosk to assist visitors to download the app and join in the Smart Torch Relay in the build-up to the Incheon Asian Games, which will run from September 19 to October 4.

The IAGOC delegation was led by Mr Kim Jae-in, Public Relations Director General, who addressed the audience on behalf of the Incheon Asian Games.

The OCA was represented by Jeremy Walker from the Media Department and Editor of the Sporting Asia newsletter. He urged the participants to follow the Asian Games on TV and cheer for the Japanese athletes, as well as to take an interest in some of the lesser-known sports and maybe even represent Japan in a future Asian Games.

The Fun Run and Smart Torch Relay were coordinated locally by the Sapporo Asian Winter Games 2017 Organising Committee (SAWGOC), of which Vice Mayor Ikushima is Secretary General.

SAWGOC and IAGOC staffed a promo kiosk to hand out leaflets, badges, pens, stickers and other souvenirs during the course of the day. The event was also attended by four members of the popular Japan women’s curling team.
