KUALA LUMPUR, March 4 – The Malaysian leg of the 18th Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games Fun Run held this morning at the Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square), in the heart of the city of Kuala Lumpur, was a huge success.

A total of 1,600 participants took part in three categories – the Men Open and Women Open over a 10 km distance, while the Fun Run was over 5km.

Participants started coming in as early as 5.30am and the Run was started at 7am (10km) and 7.15am (5km).

A warm-up session was conducted by Popcorn Studio, with the Jumba dance style, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the participants who were vibrant and energetic.

Present to witness and start of the race were Olympic of Asia delegation comprising – Tan Sri Datuk Dr. M. Jegathesan, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Executive Board member & Chair of OCA Medical Committee, Wissam Trkmani form the OCA President Office, Elena Chakarova, OCA Int’l Relations Officer and Jeans Zhou Jian the OCA Media Manager.

A one-minute silence was observed before the start of the Run to mark respect to Malaysia’s marathon runner Evelyn Ang, who passed away on Thursday, when she succumbed to injuries after 81 days after being hit by a car during international Marathon here on Dec 10.

Hellen Sarita De Lima, the Secretary- General of the Indonesia Olympic Council, who was also present to promote the Run, started off the 5km Run with a fire of a gun, together with Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) vice-president, Datuk Paduka Mumtaz Jaafar.

The 10km Run was started off by Wissam and Malaysia’s Jakarta/Palembang Asian Games contingent Chef de Mission, Dato’ Seri Abdul Azim Mohd Zabibi, who is also the National Sports Institute chairman, together with Wissam.

Others from OCM present were president Tan Sri Tunku Imran ibni Almarhum Tuanka Ja’afar, general secretary Datuk Low Beng Choo and assistant secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi.

It was indeed and exciting day for the participants who enjoyed the run in carnival atmosphere.

Although initially only the top 15 from the Men and Women’s category were to be awarded prizes, OCA and OCM decided to give the first 25 men for the Men’s Open and 24 women after the overwhelming response for the Run.

On the eve of the Run on Saturday, a Press Conference was held at the Olympic Council Malaysia building to brief the local media on the Run.

Wissam Trkmani said the run is organised by their respective affiliates which, among others, aims to promote the quadrennial games to the public.

"On behalf of OCA, I would like to congratulate the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) for organising this fun run which had already started since the 2006 Doha Asian Games in Qatar.

"Before Malaysia, this fun run has been held in several Asian countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Lebanon.”

Earlier Jegathesan had read out the OCA president Sheikh Ahmed Al-Fahad Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah message for the Run where he had urged all affiliates to promote the Asian Games and give full support.

He added in his speech that the Games maybe six months away, but the Games fever has already and the ‘fun’ begins with these Run which is to promote the Games in Jakarta and Palembang rom Aug 18- to September 2.

This morning indeed the participants had fun and enjoyed the Run.

Besides prizes for the winners, all participants who completed the Run in both the Open and Fun Rune were given finishers medals and a participation certificate besides goodie bags and the official Run T-shirt.

The Men’s category was won by a 16-year-old Malaysian schoolboy, Rohit Rhaarje Singh Bhatt in a time of 40 mins 54s followed by Emilo Arroyo Navarro from Spain four minutes behind in 44.16, while Sean Boyes came in third in 44.41.

In the Women’s category, a regular runner, Nurhidayah Hasanuddin emerged tops in a personal best time over the 10km distance in 54.06 while Siti Nurdiana Mohamed Nordin was second in 55.20 and Yong Shaiu Pei finished third in 55.54.

The objectives of the 18th Asian Games Jakarta-Palembang 2018 Official Fun Run Program is a dedicated OCA social sport development and promotion program to be held among 45 Asian National Olympic Councils and to create awareness among the public of the 18th Asian Games Jakarta-Palembang 2018.

The objectives were certainly achieved in Malaysia from the response from the participants and also with a majority expressing their desire to be at the Games come August.
