Sheikh Ahmad presents Olympic Solidarity report to IOC Session

07 Feb 2014
Sochi, Russia: OCA President HE Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah addressed the 126th IOC Session in Sochi on Friday in his role as Chairman of the IOC's Olympic Solidarity Commission. Sheikh Ahmad stressed that the main focus of Olympic Solidarity was the Olympic Scholarship for athletes, which cover two years.

At the 22nd Olympic Winter Games, Sheikh Ahmad said that 383 athletes from 66 NOCs had received an Olympic Scholarship to compete in Sochi. In addition to this, 11 NOCs had taken part in a special OS course, meaning that Olympic Solidarity had assisted 77 different NOCs competing here in Sochi - 87 plus India, as Sheikh Ahmad put it.

"With the 77 NOCs that have been helped through different Olympic Solidarity courses, this represents 87.5 per cent of the NOCs taking part here," he said.

Sheikh Ahmad explained that the budget for Olympic Scholarships had grown from US$9 million for Vancouver 2010 to US$10 million for Sochi 2014, and the performances of the 383 athletes on a two-year scholarship coming into Sochi would be monitored and assessed for the future.

"The target is good investment for the athletes," said Sheikh Ahmad, who informed the Session that Kuwait would be hosting a forum for athletes from Africa, Asia and Oceania to promote the Olympic Scholarship programme.

"We can discuss the scholarships because we believe it is the main target of our commission," he said.

IOC President Thomas Bach congratulated Sheikh Ahmad on the "great work Olympic Solidarity is doing in the interests of the athletes in the world", and said this work was reflected in the fact there was a record number of NOCs and athletes competing at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

"This is thanks to the great success of Olympic Solidarity," said President Bach.
