Nepal stages 1st Sports Congress
Nepal Congress ends with 3-point declaration

27 Sep 2010
Kathmandu, Nepal: The First Sports Congress organised by Nepal Olympic Committee took place on September 25-26 at Godavari Village Resort and concluded with a three-point declaration and 12-point resolution. The congress, which attracted more than 145 stakeholders from Nepal’s sports sector, made the declaration after discussing 10 working papers.

The declaration directs all the stakeholders to obey the IOC Charter and uphold the ethics of the Olympic Movement. The declaration states: “The Congress unanimously realised that the fundamental principles of the Olympic Movement in accordance with the IOC Charter shall be strictly complied by all the stakeholders of the Nepalese Olympic Movement with full respect and responsibility on a fully reliable basis.”

The second point called for a strategic plan in sports development in all sports, compiled in cooperation with the NOC and WADA. The third point expressed full confidence that Ethics and Good Governance applied to all stakeholders, and recognised the importance of media, marketing and government support in the overall success of the Olympic Movement.

Among the 12 resolutions was a call to set up a development and welfare fund for athletes to support them in training, formal education and vocational training to give them a career after competition, and, for the most successful athletes, a life pension for bringing honour to the country.

The congress was graced by the presence of Dr Santiparb Tejvanija, advisor to the President of the Olympic Council of Asia, and chaired by Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan, President of the Nepal NOC. The welcome speech was given by Jeevan Ram Shrestha, NOC Secretary General and congress coordinator.

The OCA and IOC supported the congress technically and financially.
