Bahrain NOC hosts first GCC Sport-Environment Conference

24 Oct 2012
Manama, Bahrain: The first GCC Conference on Sport and the Environment, organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee, concluded at the Ritz Carlton Hotel Al Ghazal Ballroom in Seef Area. A number of recommendations were produced during the sixth and final session of the conference, which was held over three days. The first recommendations were about enhancing the environmental aspect in national sports events, and the inclusion of concepts and environmental culture in physical education lessons.

Participants also noted the importance of supporting and developing ways of cooperation among the International Olympic Committee, the United Nations Environment Programme, National Committees for Sport and the Environment, and Sports Federations in the GCC.

The conference strongly recommended the inclusion of environmental themes in all sports events organised by the National Olympic Committees and the sports federations in the GCC. Appointing famous sports figures as ambassadors to spread environmental awareness was another recommendation.

These recommendations will be submitted to the GCC Sport and Environment Committee for follow up. The next conference will be hosted by Qatar.
