Youth Reporter Project opens KL’s Olympic activities

27 Apr 2012
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: The Olympic Council of Asia’s Youth Reporter Project stopped off at Kuala Lumpur on Friday for the third leg of the series to promote the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, in 2014.

After staging previous events in Mongolia and Oman, the OCA - in cooperation with the Olympic Council of Malaysia - kicked off a sequence of five events over the course of three days in the Malaysian capital with the Youth Reporter Project.

From an initial entry of 130 essays on the Asian Games, Olympic Council of Malaysia officials invited 50 students for the three-hour workshop, which consisted of a two-hour seminar based on a typical day for a sports reporter at the Asian Games, followed by an exercise in which the students had to write their own news article from information provided.

They also took part in a press conference with Ms. Rajes Paul, a sports journalist for the Star newspaper, who provided an insight into the ups, and occasionally the downs, of life as a sports reporter at a major event.

Dato’ Sieh Kok Chi, Honorary Secretary of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, welcomed everyone to the OCM HQ at Wisma Olympic in downtown Jalan Hang Jebat, and Mr Haider Farman, Director of the OCA’s Asian Games department, addressed the students and introduced the project. The Master of Ceremonies was Mr Chua Hong Tam, Projects Officer of the OCM.

Also in attendance was Mr Olivier Niamkey, Asia Manager for Olympic Solidarity in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The winner of the Youth Reporter Project Kuala Lumpur will be announced on Saturday, when the Asian Games Fun Run and Fun Learn quiz are held, along with the start of the Olympic Solidarity/OCA Regional Forum for South Asia, East Asia and South East Asia National Olympic Committees. The final event in the schedule is the Olympic Values Education Programme.
