OCA President praises PyeongChang 2018 for excellent Olympic Winter Games

27 Feb 2018
Kuwait, February 27, 2018: Speaking following the closing of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, on 25 feb 2018 OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah said: “On behalf of the OCA, I would like to congratulate the PyeongChang 2018 Organising Committee, the IOC and the people of the Republic of Korea for organising an excellent Olympic Winter Games.

PyeongChang 2018 provided a fantastic environment for athletes to compete at their very best and the Korean public and volunteers provided a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The Asian NOCs can be very proud of the success of PyeongChang 2018, which showcased Asia’s capacity to host world-class sports events and demonstrated the Asian continent’s commitment to Olympism.

“The Games also showcased the ongoing development of winter sport in Asia. A total of 451 athletes from 19 Asian NOCs qualified for PyeongChang 2018 with Asian athletes winning 40 medals (10 golds, 19 silvers and 11 bronze) at the Games. The NOCs of Malaysia and Singapore also sent athletes to an Olympic Winter Games for the very first time in their history.

This follows on the back of the success of the Asian Winter Games in Sapporo in Japan 2017 as the OCA continues to provide opportunities for Asia’s NOCs to engage and inspire over four billion Asian people. “The OCA’s vision is a united Asia, equal and more peaceful through sport and the PyeongChang 2018 demonstrated how sport has the power to bring hope of a more peaceful future.

The Unified Korean Olympic Team marching together was a significant moment for the Korean Peninsula and reinforced how through sport we can build bridges and begin more peaceful dialogue. The OCA will continue to support all our NOCs in developing sport and ensuring it remains a unifying force in the region.
“Once again we would like to thank Republic of Korea, the IOC and the Asian Athletes and their NOCs that participated in PyeongChang 2018 for making the Games such an outstanding event. We now look forward to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games which we are sure will once again show the world Asia’s commitment to the Olympic Movement and provide an unprecedented opportunity for sport development in the region.
