Mongolia NOC honours women’s 3x3 basketball team

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia: There is more good news for Mongolian basketball, reports FIBA Asia. Close on the heels of the launch of the country’s first ever collegiate league comes recognition from the Mongolian National Olympic Committee for one of the basketball teams.The Mongolian women’s 3x3 team of Buriadyn Altanzayaa, Davaasürengiin Ganzul, Jambalyn Ishtayaa and Bayasgalany Solongo was named the 2013 Mongolian Team of the Year for taking silver in the first edition of the FIBA Asia 3x3 Championships in Doha, Qatar, last May.

After preliminary round victories over Lebanon and Nepal, the Mongolian women took down Sri Lanka in the quarterfinals and Turkmenistan in the semifinals before falling to India in the final.

In 2012, the men’s 3x3 team that placed third at the Asian Beach Games in Haiyang, China, was also named the Team of the Year, while in 2010 the Asian Games men’s team that defeated Turkmenistan and Tajikistan - Mongolia’s first basketball victories in official international competition - received the same honour, solidifying basketball as the most successful and popular team sport in Mongolia.
