Malaysia tops SEA Games medal chart with 145 gold

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, August 30, 2017: Malaysia crushed their regional rivals at the 29th SEA Games to finish well clear at the top of the medal standings on Wednesday afternoon. After the last events of the August 19-30 regional sports festival, Malaysia led the 11-team medal table with a whopping 145 gold medals – 73 gold medals clear of runner-up Thailand.

Malaysia also won 92 silvers and 86 bronzes for a total of 323 medals. Second place went to Thailand with 72 gold medals while Vietnam was third with 58, just pipping SEA Games 2015 host Singapore (57).

Malaysia had targeted 111 gold medals for this year's SEA Games, but its athletes already surpassed that on Monday. Indonesia, who will host the OCA’s 18th Asian Games next year, finished fifth with 38 gold medals, ahead of the Philippines (24), who will organise the 30th SEA Games in 2019.

Myanmar was seventh with seven gold medals, followed by Cambodia (3), Laos (2), Brunei and Timor-Leste, both of whom failed to win gold.
