Manama, Bahrain: The excitement is mounting in Bahrain ahead of the 3rd Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Women’s Games due to be held from March 3-13. With nine sports on the programme, the draws for volleyball and basketball took place on Sunday evening at the Regency Hotel. The five teams in each competition – Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Oman and Kuwait – will play a single round-robin tournament.

Earlier Sunday, the tournament logo, mascot and official website (
www.gwg13.bh) were unveiled at the GCC delegation directors meeting. The meeting was attended by Bahrain Olympic Committee General Secretary Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalifa, GCC Games executive committee head Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa and technical committee heads.

Shaikh Ahmed expressed his pride on the occasion of this GCC gathering and said the BOC would spare no effort in making the Women’s Games a success. Shaikha Hayat welcomed the delegation representatives to Bahrain and praised the significant role of the BOC and its financial and moral support offered to this prestigious competition.

She commended the efforts of the GCC Olympic Committees President as well as the GCC General Secretariat, hoping that this edition of the Women’s Games would add further prestige to Bahrain’s role as a first-class host of regional and international sports events.
Shaikha Hayat also attended the anti-doping workshop, supervised by the GCC Regional Anti-Doping Organisation. A total of 25 women took part. Shaikha Hayat then presented the certificates to each participant, as executive secretary Hana Al Buti received a memento in appreciation to her efforts in organising this workshop.
