‘Great honour’ for Myanmar to host OS/OCA forum

11 May 2014
Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar: The President of the Myanmar Olympic Committee and Union Minister for Sport, His Excellency U Tint Hsan, opened the Olympic Solidarity/Olympic Council of Asia Regional Forum for South East Asian and East Asian Nations in Nay Pyi Taw on Sunday morning.

HE U Tint Hsan said the forum was of particular significance to Myanmar because it was the first time Myanmar had hosted such an event.  “We embrace this opportunity with great honour,” he said, at the Hotel Royal ACE.

The two-day forum will include presentations by the organising committees of three major Games in 2014: the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, in September-October; the 4th Asian Beach Games in Phuket, Thailand, in November, and the IOC’s 2nd Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, in August.

The Sports Minister said Myanmar would compete in all three Games, because only through high-level international competition and partnership with the IOC, Olympic Solidarity and OCA could the NOC build deep relations and gain support for its athletes.

Olympic Solidarity’s Olivier Niamkey said the Myanmar forum was one of eight around the world, with two in Asia following Bahrain last week, and urged the NOCs to contribute to the Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms of IOC President Thomas Bach.

On behalf of the OCA, Asian Games Director Haider Farman said the NOCs should use the information garnered at the forum on good governance to benefit the Olympic Movement and NOC in their own country or region.

He also thanked Myanmar for the organisational logistics, including a private jet to transport the delegates from Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw on Sunday morning.
