The opening of the women s basketball tournament in Mongolia
Mongolia builds women’s basketball team

31 Mar 2011
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia: NOC Mongolia’s Women and Sport Commission, in kind cooperation with the Mongolian Basketball Federation, is organising a women's basketball tournament in two age groups and with the participation of 20 teams.

NOC President D. Zagdsuren, the Chairman of the State Authority for Physical Education and Sport, Ch. Naranbaatar, Mongolian Basketball Federation Secretary-General B. Dashdorj, and D. Arvin, Member of Parliament and Chairwoman of the NOC’s Women and Sport Commission, together with well-known sports veterans attended the opening ceremony at Central Sports Gymnasium.

The main aim of the tournament is to support women’s basketball, involve more girls in this sport, upgrade their performance and ultimately to send a Mongolian women’s basketball team to the East Asian Games in Tianjin, China, in 2013, thereby ending the complete absence of female representatives in basketball in any regional and continental Games. The men’s team, on the other hand, have performed quite well since 1993.

The tournament, which attracted 250 female players, will run to April 3. The finals will be held in the new Sports Complex.

Mongolian female athletes have proved their strength internationally in judo, wrestling, shooting and even in boxing, capturing gold, silver and bronze medals at World Championships and Asian Games held last year.
