Medical Committee Chairman Dr. Mani Jegathesan
OCA briefed on IOC medical funding

10 Nov 2009
Guangzhou, China: The annual meeting of the OCA Medical Committee and Anti-Doping Commission began on Tuesday with a presentation by Susan Greinig, Medical Programmes Manager of the International Olympic Committee.

The programmes for the five continents within the IOC have a US$2.8 million budget from Olympic Solidarity for the 2009-2012 quadrennial, and the invited guest from Lausanne outlined details of the funding available in various projects and how to apply for contributions towards courses and other activities.

“I think this was a good start because we have to deal a lot with the IOC Medical Commission and there are a lot of opportunities for collaboration,” said Committee Chairman Dr. Mani Jegathesan.

“That is why I took the step of inviting Susan this time because we have been working closely with her over the last two years getting these funds and so on. I wanted to give her an opportunity to see how we work and also for us to be able to understand better how we can utilise her resources for maximum benefit for our members.

“We found that there are a lot of IOC activities and it appears that Asian involvement has not been as much as we would like, so we are now looking at possibilities to escalate that, to upgrade our Asian involvement in some of those global activities. Susan did say that in an evaluation of the courses programme for the continents Asia did very well for 2009.”

Dr. Jega concluded that the presentation would create awareness among the NOCs of what was available and how they could tap into the funds with applications that were “within the aims and ambitions of the funding agencies. “
