China leads Asian NOCs at Sochi 2014

16 Feb 2014
Sochi, Russia: After 51 of 98 events here at Sochi, three Asian NOCs have won gold medals and four in total have earned a place on the podium. At the close of play on Saturday night, February 15, China was in ninth place in the medal rankings with three gold medals, two silver and no bronze for five in total; Japan was 14th with 1-3-1-5, Korea 16th on 1-1-1-3 and Kazakhstan 25th with the men’s figure skating bronze medal for Denis Ten.

China’s female athletes have earned all three gold medals in short track and speed skating, and four of the five total medals, while all five of Japan’s medals have been won in men’s competitions.

Korea’s female athletes have picked up all their country’s three medals, in speed skating and short track, and the disappointing performance of their men’s team, especially in speed skating, has been one of the main talking points of the delegation.

In Vancouver four years ago, Korea won six gold, six silver and two bronze for 14 total medals, but that haul will be difficult to match this time.

Going into Sunday’s competitions, Germany led the table on 7-3-2-12, followed by Switzerland (5-1-1-7) and Russia (4-6-5-15).

The 22nd Olympic Winter Games close on February 23.
