Five women elected to Afghan NOC Board of Directors

The first ever Afghanistan National Olympic Committee Extraordinary General Assembly (EGA) was held on Monday, September 28, 2009, at 11 am at Hotel Serina, as per the statutes approved by the Afghan NOC General Assembly and the IOC. All 21 General Assembly members attended.

Afghanistan NOC President Mr. Mohammad Zahir Aghbar opened the EGA and presented a brief report on the activities of the Afghanistan Olympic Committee during the last six months.

He said the Afghan NOC enjoyed an excellent relationship with international sporting bodies, including the IOC and OCA, which resulted in the successful participation of Afghan athletes in the 1st Asian Martial Arts Games in Bangkok, the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the OCA General Assembly in Singapore in July 2009.

He also explained that the Afghan athletes were preparing for the upcoming 3rd Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam in October-November 2009, and the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, in November 2010.

Mr. Aghbar thanked the IOC and OCA representative Mr. Reza Chairm for being present at  this important meeting.

Before moving to the Agenda items, the General Assembly unanimously decided that the following six new sports federations should be included as a full member of the Afghan NOC General Assembly with full voting rights: Afghanistan Karate Federation, Afghanistan Snooker Federation, Afghanistan Golf Federation, Paralympics Federation, Afghanistan Martial Arts Sports and Afghanistan Bodybuilding Federation.

The Afghan NOC now consists of 26 members, of which 19 sports federations are on the Olympic Games programme. The 19 Olympic sports federations are: athletics, rowing, badminton, basketball, boxing, cycling, football, gymnastics, weightlifting, handball, hockey, judo, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, swimming, fencing, wrestling and table tennis.

The seven non-Olympic sports federations are: wushu, bodybuilding, karate, snooker, golf, Paralympics and martial arts sports.

Agenda decisions:

• The General Assembly unanimously approved to amend Article 16 “The Composition of Board of Directors” to be composed of 17 members. These are comprised of 11 elected members (president, vice president, secretary general, treasurer and seven members) and six appointed members nominated by the president and approved by the Board of Directors.

• Mr. Mohammad Zahir Aghbar from the Afghanistan Handball Federation was elected President of the Afghanistan NOC for the term 2009–2013 by a majority vote. He secured 23 out of the 26 votes. There were three candidates.

• Mr. Sayeed Ahmad Zia Muzafari from the Afghanistan Basketball Federation was elected as Vice President by securing 16 out of the 22 votes. There were two candidates.

• Mr. Jan Alam Hussaini, President of the Afghanistan Athletics Federation, was elected Secretary General by securing 14 out of the 26 votes. There were three candidates.

• Since there was only one candidate for the position of Treasurer, the General Assembly unanimously elected Ms. Khatera Waqf (Volleyball) as NOC Treasurer.

• The General Assembly unanimously elected the following candidates as Afghanistan NOC Board of Directors: Mr. Ghulam Rabani Rabani (Cycling), Mr. Ghaus Nakbeen (Football), Mr. Dad Mohammad Payenda (Gymnastics), Mr. Keramuddin Karim (Weightlifting), Mr. Ameer Hussain Haideri (Judo), Mr. Bawar Hutak (Table Tennis), Ms. Parwin Sofi (Tennis).

• The NOC President, based on Article 16 of the Afghanistan NOC Statutes, nominated the following six members to the Board of Directors with full voting rights, approved by the house: Mr. Safiullah Sebat (Swimming), Ms. Sabrian Saqib (Wushu), Ms. Fahima Sarfrazi (Fencing), Ms. Naseema Niazi (Wrestling), Mr. Rohullah Nikpa (Taekwondo), Mr. Abdul Rahman Mohammadi (Hockey).
