Supporters cheer on AIMAG teams

28 Jun 2013
Incheon, Korea: From Korea to Kazakhstan and Maldives to Malaysia, one thing is for sure - every team will be supported enthusiastically at the 4th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games. Thanks to the efforts of the Incheon International Relations Foundation (IIRF), teams of youth supporters have been assembled to follow all NOCs here, even at the official team welcome ceremony in the Athletes' Village.

On Friday afternoon, both Myanmar and Kazakhstan enjoyed vociferous support from their official cheer teams, who held up colourful signs and banners and joined in the post-ceremony photo celebrations.

"Some of the countries coming to the Asian Games in 2014 are not well known in Korea, so we want to promote and support them at the Indoor and Martial Arts Games - not only in Incheon but in other cities and around the country," said Stacey Choi, Assistant Manager, Division of Global Affairs, IIRF.

"Every team here will have around 20 youth supporters to cheer them on at their sports events. When we first opened a website to attract volunteers we had over 3,000 applications and from this we have 1,000 now supporting the teams."

Their banners and their cheers certainly added some festivity to the team welcome ceremony on Friday afternoon, when Lee Bu-hyun, Vice Mayor of the Athletes' Village, welcomed the delegations of Myanmar and Kazakhstan in a joint ceremony.

With Myanmar preparing to host the SEA Games in December, many of their athletes are training overseas in China, Russia and Vietnam; hence an entry of only six athletes in a total delegation of 11.

Thanks to the official cheer teams, however, Myanmar will still enjoy plenty of support.
