10 Dec 2017, DHAKA - The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) will hold a Fun Run in Dhaka tomorrow to promote the upcoming 18th Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang, Indonesia.
The Fun Run is a social event aimed at raising awareness about the Asian Games, which is scheduled to be held in from August 18 to September 2, 2018.
Around 10,000 athletes from 45 countries and regions in 40 sports and 462 events are expected to participate in the first Asian Games in Indonesia since in 1962.
Ahead of the Games, the OCA has planned to hold Fun Run in 28 countries and regions, which was also expected to give the host National Olympic Councils an opportunity to develop their own awareness programme for their athletes. Pakistan hosted the first Fun Run ahead of Jakarta meet on December 7 in Lahore before the OCA took the event in Dhaka.
The event in Dhaka will start at Bangladesh Football Federation premises in Motijheel before ending at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
“The Fun Run is a kind of message for Asian Games the OCA wants to convey to all participating countries. As of part this endeavour, they took the event in Dhaka. A delegation of OCA is also here to help us organise the event,” Bangladesh Olympic Association Deputy Secretary-General Ashikur Rahman Miku told a press conference on Sunday.
Miku informed that Bangladesh has planned to send athletes from 12 to 14 disciplines in Asian Games and they would finalise the events very soon.
Addressing the press conference at the BOA house, OCA media manager Jeans Zhou Jian said Fun Run would continue in Asian countries until July 18 - exactly one month before the opening ceremony of the Games in Jakarta.
“For 2018, we also planned 28 NOCs. The first Fun Run held in Pakistan and Bangladesh is the second. The programme will restart in January in Sri Lanka and Maldives, followed by Malaysia, Thailand and then we will go to Qatar and UAE in February,” he said.
Replying to a question, Jeans said Fun Run is quite different than Olympic Day Run, which is usually held on June 23 worldwide celebrating the Olympic Day.
“OCA has 45 National Olympic Committee Members, where we want to create a promotional programme, which does not end in one day,” Jeans said.
“This time is an eight-month programme. For 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, the Fun Run had started in 2011, so it was basically four-year programme. Our principal is that we want to have an active programme every month to keep the public awareness about our Asian Games,” he said.
Asaduzzaman Kohinoor, the convener of Fun Run organising committee, the event will start at 7:30 where they are expecting at least 500 athletes and students to participate.
“The BOA will provide certificate and tee-shirt to all participants. To make the event more attractive, we will give medals to 30 participants who will be selected through a lottery,” he said.
