Phnom Penh, Cambodia, May 6, 2018: The Secretary General of the 18th Asian Games Organising Committee, Mr Eris Herryanto, updated the Cambodian media on preparations for the 2018 Asiad at an Asian Games Fun Run press conference at the Sokha Hotel in Phnom Penh on Sunday afternoon. Mr Herryanto thanked the Olympic Council of Asia and the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia for holding a Fun Run – set to take place on Monday, May 7 – and said 2018 was a very significant year for sport in Indonesia.
“This will be the second time the Asian Games will be in Jakarta,” he said. “The first time was in 1962, on the occasion of the fourth Asian Games, and we have a lot of legacy from that Asian Games.”
The main hub of the 18th Asian Games, which will take place in Jakarta and Palembang, capital of South Sumatra, from August 18 to September 2, will be the Gelora Bung Karno sports complex in downtown Senayan, as in 1962. The competition venues have been renovated and refurbished, including the Main Stadium, which will hold the Opening and Closing Ceremony.
“We are preparing transportation and a highways system so we have a legacy for the Asian Games,” he said. “We are in the final preparations for the Asian Games and we hope we will be able to have a successful Games.” Mr Herryanto said there would be 73 venues – for competition and training – in the big cities of Jakarta and Palembang, some 1,000km from the capital.
“There is a very different culture and social activity in both cities,” he added. “So far we have registered 3,200 media and we are expecting to have about 5,000 media.” The Secretary General of Cambodia NOC, Mr Vath Chamroeun, said the Asian Games Fun Run would start at 6am on Monday, May 7, with 1,000 runners including 200 national athletes. The 3km course will take the participants around the Sokha Hotel on the banks of the Mekong River.
He added that Cambodia was preparing to send 35 athletes in 12 sports to the Asian Games, along with 25 team officials. There will also be 10 observers as Cambodia builds up to hosting the South East Asian Games in 2023.
“People in Cambodia are paying more attention to sports news,” said Vath. “By holding the Asian Games Fun Run we will let our people know that we are ready to participate in the Asian Games. The Cambodian people are waiting for the results of the 18th Asian Games because at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon we won our first gold medal, in taekwondo. We were waiting 60 years.”
The Director of the OCA’s Asian Games department, Mr Haider Farman, said the OCA’s Fun Run series was promoting the Asian Games around the continent and added that, despite the conflicts in the region, the flags of the countries always flew at the Asian Games and OCA events, showing the unity of the continent.
He told the media that Iran and Iraq would both hold two Asian Games Fun Runs in different cities next month, showing they were peaceful cities and countries.
