Date : 03 Oct 2017

Singapore, October 3, 2017: OCA and IOC Executive Board member Ng Ser Miang has paid tribute to the former IOC Vice President Kim Un-yong, who passed away in Seoul, Korea, on Tuesday, October 3. He was 86. The Singaporean sports leader, who is Chairman of the OCA Advisory Committee, posted a personal tribute on his Facebook account.

Mr Ng, who was IOC Vice President from 2009-2013, described the late Mr Kim as “a dear friend, colleague and mentor”. He added: “A true sports leader. He will be sadly missed.”

During his sports administration career, Kim was one of the most powerful figures in the IOC, which he joined in 1986. He played an instrumental role in helping Seoul win the right to host the 1988 Summer Olympics.

He also served as the founding president of the World Taekwondo Federation -- presently World Taekwondo -- and of the Korean National Olympic Committee. Kim was largely responsible for helping taekwondo become an Olympic medal sport.
