IOC approves Kashima Stadium for Tokyo 2020 football tournament

Date : 11 Jul 2017

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 10, 2017: During its second day of meetings, the IOC Executive Board heard reports from the PyeongChang 2018, Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022 organising committees on plans to deliver each of their respective Olympic Games.

*Following the presentation from Tokyo 2020, the Executive Board confirmed the Ibaraki Kashima Stadium as a venue for the football competition at the Olympic Games.

Located in Kashima City, Ibaraki Prefecture, the Ibaraki Kashima Stadium is one of the top football stadiums in Japan and was used for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The venue, which is known for its dynamic atmosphere, was damaged during the 2011 earthquake, but is again fully operational following assistance from FIFA and various stakeholders.

*Led by PyeongChang 2018 Executive Vice President Kim Jae-youl, the Organising Committee was on site in Lausanne to present updates on progress towards hosting the Olympic Winter Games 2018.

With 240 days to go until the Games kick off in the Republic of Korea, the PyeongChang Olympic Village and media village units are already sold out as part of the Games' legacy. The Gangneung Olympic Village also enjoys high demand, with seven bidders per unit.

Having successfully carried out 22 test events for Olympic Winter sports in the past year, which reinforced infrastructure readiness, PyeongChang 2018 is focused on engaging with the public, as well as revising plans to ensure both fans and athletes enjoy the best environments possible.

*IOC Coordination Commission Chair for Beijing 2022, Alexander Zhukov, presented key priorities for the Beijing Organising Committee, which includes the finalisation of the venue master plan, working with International Federations to identify sport managers and further developing the concept to host “green, inclusive, open and clean” Winter Games.
