PyeongChang, Korea, February 18, 2018: Malaysia’s first appearance in a Winter Olympics continued on Sunday when 19-year-old alpine skier Jeffrey Webb took part in the men’s giant slalom at Yongpyong Alpine Centre. Webb, who formed Malaysia’s first Winter Olympics team along with figure skater Julian Yee, finished 68th of 110 entries over two runs of the course.
His first run was timed at 1 minute 23.83 seconds and put him in 78th place, and his second run was almost identical at 1:23.84, the 70th best time of the second round. His total time of 2:47.67 left him 68th on a day when 21 competitors failed to finish the first run and nine more did not finish the second run, while others were disqualified.
Austria’s Marcel Hirscher, who is Webb’s alpine ski hero, won the gold medal with a combined time of 2:18.04. The other racers included Asa Miller, the Philippines’ flag-bearer in the opening ceremony and team-mate of figure skater Michael Martinez. Miller completed both runs for 70th position overall.
