Park Tae Hwan - his smile lights up a rainy day

Date : 02 Jul 2013

Incheon, Korea: Park Tae Hwan, gold medal winner of the men's 400m freestyle at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, was hosting a signing ceremony this afternoon in Incheon. There was a long, long queue when I arrived. Squeals filled my ears. Everything is crazy! I walked nearby the photography area. Unfortunately, the photographer standing in front of me is much taller than me, I couldn't see anything! I could just see Park Tae Hwan's cap even though I was standing on my tiptoes.

A few minutes later, I was the one nearest him in the photo area. I could see his face clearly at that time. He is a sunny boy. He was asking for the names of the people who were asking him for an autograph, and signed their souvenirs with their own name at the top. He kept smiling all the time, especially at the children.

As the 30-minute signing ceremony drew to a close, the people at the end of the queue were screaming, worried it was going to be too late for them to meet their hero. When it was announced that the session would be extended by 10 minutes, everybody was cheering. Then it was my turn.

I was the first one in the VIP area. I approached him, and my face was burning. Maybe that is a natural reaction when a girl sees a handsome guy. The Youth Reporter from Malaysia, Jonathan, and I took a photo with him first. And we asked him for his autograph. For sure, he did not reject us. And Jonathan and his mother, my cousin and me, four of us, took a photo with him. At that time, I heard a Korean girl say that we were so lucky. Yes! She is right!

I was so lucky to have this opportunity. After our photos, it was time for him to leave. Everybody was shouting something "Don't leave!", "Oppa (elder brother in Korean), you must not leave me." Everyone was crazy, shouting, singing a sorrowful song, and even chased after his car.

When the car was moving out, he rolled down the window and said goodbye to his fans with a nice smile.

Even though today is a rainy day, it became sunny after seeing his glorious smiling face.
