Mixed relay win earns triathlon grand slam for Japan

Palembang, Indonesia, September 2, 2018: Japan completed a golden sweep of the triathlon titles on Sunday morning as the nation claimed the final gold of the 18th Asian Games by winning the Mixed Relay event.

The four-athlete team of Yuka Sato, Jumpei Furuya, Yuko Takahashi and Yuichi Hosoda finished in a combined time of 1 hour 30 minutes and 39 seconds to secure the gold by more than two minutes ahead of second-placed Korea Republic. Hong Kong, China won the bronze.

The victory completed Japan’s domination in the three-discipline sport after Takahashi had won the women’s event and Furuya had followed up with another gold in the men's race.

The 27-year-old Furuya completed the 1500m swim, 40 kilometre cycle and 10 kilometre run in a time of 1:49:43 to beat Kazakhstan’s Ayan Beisenbayev by almost a minute, with Li Mingxu from China finishing in third.

Takahashi, meanwhile, was the only woman to go under the two-hour mark in her race, finishing in a time of 1:59:29 to defeat Zhong Mengying of China by 1 minute and 47 seconds. Macau’s Hoi Ling took the bronze.
