Colombo, Sri Lanka, August 29, 2019: The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka has signed a long-term Memorandum of Understanding with Hashima City in Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
The multi-faceted agreement signed between Sri Lanka NOC Secretary General Maxwell de Silva and Hashima City Mayor Satoshi Matsui will help Sri Lankan athletes during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as well as install certain programmes looking beyond the Games.
Maxwell de Silva said: “The people of Hashima City are very happy with these links. We will work together during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as well as after the conclusion of the Games. The bottom-line is we will be working very closely with Hashima City and obtaining assistance from them.
“The sport that we are specifically looking at at this point is taekwondo as the city is well equipped to provide assistance. Besides, there is a top-ranking businessman in the city who is interested in assisting us with taekwondo as he is a big-time supporter and fan of the sport,” De Silva added.
During the Olympics, Hashima City will host the Sri Lanka team. A students’ exchange programme benefitting young Sri Lankan athletes and vice versa is also on the cards.
The MOU was signed on the sidelines of the Chef De Mission seminar in Tokyo last week.
