Tashkent, Uzbekistan, August 7, 2019: Three Uzbekistan athletes have been given financial rewards from the government for qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
2018 Asian Games gold medallist Denis Istomin, tennis, Olga Zabelinskaya, cycling, and Server Ibragimov, Paralympic shooting, each received 100 million soums – roughly US$11,500 – for earning qualification to the Summer Olympics in Tokyo and the Paralympic Games.
The athletes received their cash grants at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Physical Culture and Sports of Uzbekistan. The event was attended by the President of the National Olympic Committee Rustam Shaabdurakhmanov and Minister of Physical Culture and Sports Dilmurod Nabiyev.
Apart from grants for the athletes, their trainers each received 50 million soums.
“It is very important for me that I was among the first to get a ticket to the Olympics. Now it is time to turn the Asian Games gold medal into the Olympics medal,” said Istomin who will be appearing at his third Olympic Games.
“The best way to prepare for the Olympics is by taking part in more international tournaments. I also want to thank the government of Uzbekistan for supporting us,” added Istomin.
Ranked 102 in the world currently, Istomin defeated Wu Yibing of China in the men’s singles final at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang.
