Jakarta, Indonesia, December 21, 2018: Indonesia's national baseball team aims to win gold in the forthcoming 2019 Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines, reports Xinhua News.
The upbeat target was made based on the recent performance of the Indonesian team which, along with the Philippines, is among the strongest in the Southeast Asia region, said Dana Kusumo, head of sporting development of the country's baseball association.
"The team from the Philippines is always the strongest opponent for Indonesia," he said.
Practising overseas is a key measure aimed at boosting the skill of the players ahead of the SEA Games, Kusumo said.
"We have set a schedule to practise in foreign countries," he said, adding that there were also plans for the team to participate in some domestic tournaments.
Indonesia ranked seventh of 10 teams in the baseball competition at the 18th Asian Games on home soil in Jakarta this year. They were one of three SEA region teams in the event, along with Laos and Thailand.
Indonesia played five games and had a 1-4 win-loss record, the sole victory coming against SEA rivals Thailand 12-11.
South Korea won gold, Japan silver and Chinese Taipei bronze, reflecting the strength of the East Asia zone in baseball.
