Male, Maldives, July 16, 2019: Basketball player Ahmed Zabeer has been named as the Maldives flag bearer at the 10th Indian Ocean Island Games which will get underway on Friday, July 19, in Mauritius.

Zabeer was described as “a role model for the younger generation” by Marzooq Ahmed, Secretary General of the Maldives Olympic Committee, as he was presented with the national flag by the President of Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Sunday.

“He is not only one of the most complete athletes in the Maldives but his whole character, with his discipline and being down-to-earth, makes him a role model for the younger generation,” Ahmed said.

Maldives will take part in 14 sports at the Indian Ocean Island Games. The athletes were presented by President Solih with the official Games kit at a ceremony held at his office in Male.

President Solih reminded the squad that the first-ever international gold medal won by Maldives was 40 years ago at the inaugural Indian Ocean Island Games in 1979. He went on to speak of his hopes to host the next Games in Maldives in 2023.

The 10th Indian Ocean Island Games will take place from July 19 to 28. The countries taking part are Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles, Reunion, Mayotte, Madagascar and Comoros.

Maldives won eight medals at the last Games in 2015 and have set a target of 15 medals this time.
