Tashkent, Uzbekistan, May 20, 2019: The former Mayor of Tashkent, Rustam Shoabdurakhmanov, has been elected as the new President of the Uzbekistan National Olympic Committee.
Shoabdurakhmanov was elected at an extraordinary general meeting of the Uzbekistan Olympic Committee last week. The EGM was attended by the Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, Abdulla Oripov, and the presidential advisor on youth, science, education, health and sports, Abdujabar Abduvakhitov.
Shoabdurakhmanov is also Chairman of the Fencing Federation of Uzbekistan and replaces Umid Akhmadzhonov, who was head of the NOC since January 2018.
Akhmadzhonov, who stepped down voluntarily, will remain as first vice president of the Uzbekistan Football Association and the first vice president of the National Paralympic Association.
Shoabdurakhmanov served as Mayor of Tashkent city from 2001 to 2005. Since July 2017 he has been the Director of the Authority for construction, reconstruction and overhaul of facilities of particularly important social, cultural and historical significance under the Cabinet of Ministers.
