Manila, Philippines, May 30, 2019: Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William Ramirez has accepted the role as the Philippines’ chef de mission to the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
Ramirez, who had initially declined the offer, announced his decision on Wednesday after receiving a call from the Philippines Olympic Committee.
Ramirez said he initially turned down the offer because he is already able to help with the country’s preparations for the 30th SEA Games as chief of the Sports Commission. But he changed his mind after being given instructions from Malacanang, the Philippine Presidential palace to accept the post.
“I was given firm instructions which I shall carry out, knowing beyond any doubt that national interest is the primary concern of the government. I humbly accept the chef de mission post for Team Philippines’ 2019 SEA Games participation,” Ramirez said.
Philippines Olympic Committee President Ricky Vargas offered the position to Ramirez as he was deemed “most qualified” for the post.
“He is the most qualified and I thank him for accepting and reconsidering,” Vargas said.
The country will host 56 sports and 528 events for more than 10,000 athletes and officials from 11 National Olympic Committees and more than 1,000 international and local media during the November 30 to December 11 SEA Games.
The Games will be held in various venues in Luzon-San Juan (La Union), Clark, Subic, Metro Manila and Tagaytay City.
