Buenos Aires, Argentina, October 14, 2018: The Philippines is celebrating its first medal of the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina – a silver for Christian Tio in men’s kiteboarding at the Club Nautica San Isidro on Sunday.
The Filipino kiteboarding ace shared second place on the podium with Slovenia's Toni Vodisek on three race points as they both finished behind the champion, Deury Corniel of the Dominican Republic.
Heading into the final race, the 16-year-old Tio was trailing in fourth place behind Vodisek, USA's Cameron Maramenides and consistent top placer Corniel.
Corniel soared to yet another win to seal a well-deserved gold. Following him across the line was Vodisek but, as the Slovenian had received a one-point race penalty, he ended up with a three-point total, meaning he shared silver with third-placed Tio.
“Everyone fought hard. The wind conditions were strong when we came out – we didn’t think it would be that strong, so everyone was on big kites,” said Tio.
“I’m really, really happy and it feels so good to represent my country and win this medal.”
The Fil-Norwegian was born to pro kiteboarders Chris Mohn and Liezl Tio, who exposed him to the sport in the pristine waters of Boracay.
