Sanya City, Hainan Island, China, February 21, 2019: The Honorary Life Vice President of the Olympic Council of Asia, Raja Randhir Singh, has described Sanya City as a “hidden treasure” ahead of the OCA’s 6th Asian Beach Games in November 2020.
Raja Randhir led an OCA delegation on a site visit on Thursday morning, followed by a meeting with the Mayor of Sanya, A. Dong. The activities were part of the OCA Coordination Committee meeting with local organisers of the 2020 ABG on Thursday afternoon.
The OCA members were greeted by blue skies, pristine sandy beaches, swaying palm trees and immaculate green parks along the 27km coastline of Sanya Bay and other areas.
“We were all very impressed by the city, the gardens, the beaches and the hotels,” he said. “This is like a hidden treasure. The people of China know all about Sanya and I am sure the Asian Beach Games will introduce this beautiful resort city to a huge new international audience from all over Asia and the world.”
Raja Randhir added: “This morning we went on a tour of the beaches and I must say you have beautiful venues, beautiful beaches and top-class hotels.”
The OCA delegates were joined by representatives from the Chinese Olympic Committee and the General Administration of Sport in China to add their experience and expertise in organising major international multi-sport events.
Sanya Mayor A. Dong said the city would do its utmost for the smooth running of the ABG with the full support of the Hainan provincial bureau of culture, tourism and sport.
Known as the “Hawaii of China” due to its exotic scenery and tropical climate, Sanya welcomes 20 million tourists a year. In the seven days of the recent Chinese New Year Spring Festival, over 1 million people celebrated in Sanya, he said.
“Hosting the 2020 Asian Beach Games in Sanya is a major decision for the OCA and for the city of Sanya,” said the Mayor. “We enjoy wonderful beaches, sunshine and clean air and we promise to make it one of the best Asian Beach Games ever.”
