Damascus, Syria, October 25, 2018: The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) has reported on several medal successes for Syrian athletes in recent tournaments in swimming, powerlifting and boxing.
Bayan Jumah won a silver medal in the 100m freestyle with a time of 57.29 seconds in the France International Swimming Championship.
Ayman Kalziya won the silver medal in the 200m butterfly with a time of 1 minute 59.68 seconds in the Thailand Swimming Championship 2018.
Syria snatched six gold medals in the Afro-Arab Powerlifting Championships 2018 in the Moroccan city of Meknes.
Lara Turk, a member of the Barada Club and the national team, won three gold medals in the women’s 57kg category, while the other three medals were won by athlete/coach Ziyad Mohamed in the men’s 105kg category.
The African Powerlifting Federation organised the Championship for the first time in Morocco with the participation of most of the African Unions. The Arab countries included Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, UAE, Kuwait, Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Somalia and Morocco as well as Iran as a guest team.
Syria’s Alaa-Eddin Ghossoun and Mohamed Mlais won a gold medal and a silver medal, respectively, at the Kazakhstan Boxing Championship held in Aktau.
Ghossoun snatched the gold medal in the 91kg class, beating an Uzbek boxer in the final, while Mlais gained the silver in the +91 kg class after losing the final to his Azerbaijani rival.
