Jakarta, Indonesia, February 21, 2019: A top official of Indonesia’s Olympic Committee says the country has officially joined the bidding to host the 2032 Olympics following its huge success in hosting the Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembnag last year.
The Associated Press reported that Muddai Madang, deputy chairman of Indonesia’s National Olympic Committee, revealed on Tuesday that letters from President Joko Widodo and the Olympic Committee were delivered to International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach in Lausanne last week by Indonesia’s ambassador to Switzerland.
President Widodo first made clear the intentions of Indonesia to become the first Southeast Asian country to host the Olympics when he made a surprise announcement at the 18th Asian Games last August and September.
Indonesia is not the only Asian country to have expressed an interest in hosting the 2032 Olympic Games. India is also planning to bid for the Games while North and South Korea have confirmed an intention to launch a joint bid. There have also been expressions of interest from Australia and Russia.
South Korea has picked its capital Seoul for its joint bid with the North Korean city expected to be Pyongyang. Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon has said the joint bid would serve as an opportunity to “change the fate of the Korean peninsula”.
